Boost your mascara with lavender oil

Hello everyone!

As I told you in previous posts, essential oils can promote healthy hair and scalp.  In fact, I put tea tree oil in my shampoo to prevent itchy scalp.  But did you know that you can also use essential oils to help promote healthy eyelash hair growth?  Here's how...

All you have to do is put one drop of 100% pure lavender essential oil in your mascara tube right when you open it for the first time.  One tiny drop of essential oil is enough.  Then you just apply as usual.

Just 1 drop of pure lavender oil:
  • extends the life of your mascara
  • kills mites and bacteria
  • promotes lash growth
  • strengthens your lashes
  • + it smells amazing!

  • Some people claim to have had issues with some kinds of mascara but it has worked well with the mascara brands that I use.
  • Only use 100% pure lavender essential oil; no added ingredients!

I’d love to hear from those of you who have tried this!  Has lavender oil made your lashes longer and thicker too?

DIY: Bug repellent spray 🐛🐜 🐌

Hello everyone!

Let's talk about... bugs.  Warm spring weather means that bugs and other pests come out of hibernation.  As a vegan, I don't want to kill any bugs, but they can be extremely annoying!

Of course, many people turn to chemical sprays to get rid of them.  Unfortunately, in addition to having a very unpleasant odour, conventional insect repellents can harm people who have allergies, and even cause health issues, not to mention the harmful effects to the environment.

Fortunately, you can repel pests with essential oils.  Here's a recipe for a DIY bug repellent spray!

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons essential oil/s (list below)
  • 1 tablespoon vodka or rubbing alcohol
  • 1/2 cup  witch hazel
  • 1/2 cup water (or vinegar)
  • 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin (optional)

  1. Place essential oils in a glass spray bottle.  Add vodka or alcohol and shake well.
  2. Pour in witch hazel and shake to combine.
  3. Add 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin, if using.  This helps the ingredients stay combined.
  4. Add water and shake again.  Shake well before each use.

Below is a list of bugs and pests and the essential oils you can use to repel them:

Ants: Peppermint, Spearmint
Aphids: Cedarwood, Hyssop, Peppermint, Spearmint
Beetles: Peppermint, Thyme
Caterpillars: Peppermint, Spearmint
Chiggers: Lavender, Lemongrass, Sage, Thyme
Fleas: Peppermint, Spearmint, Lemongrass, Lavender
Flies: Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage
Gnats: Patchouli, Spearmint
Lice: Cedarwood, Peppermint, Spearmint
Mosquitoes: Lavender, Lemongrass
Moths: Cedarwood, Hyssop, Lavender, Peppermint, Spearmint
Plant lice: Peppermint, Spearmint
Slugs: Cedarwood, Hyssop, Pine
Snails: Cedarwood, Pine, Patchouli
Spiders: Peppermint, Spearmint
Ticks: Lavender, Lemongrass, Sage, Thyme
Weevils: Cedarwood, Patchouli, Sandalwood

What do you use to repel bugs and pest from your home?

DIY: Moisturising dry scalp treatments (4 recipes)

Hello everyone!

If you suffer from dry, flaky, itchy scalp, deep treating with a moisturising oil blend, once or twice a week, can be just what you need.  All you need are a few ingredients to rub into your scalp, leave on for a little while, and then wash out.

  • 1 tbsp carrier oil (coconut, almond, argan or jojoba oil)
  • 8 drops of essential oil

Recipe #1 - Use for dry, itchy scalp
  • 2 drops rosemary
  • 2 drops lavender
  • 2 drops tea tree
  • 2 drops cedarwood

Recipe #2 - Use for dry, flaky scalp
  • 4 drops lemon
  • 2 drops lavender
  • 2 drops peppermint

Recipe # 3 - Anti-fungal blend
  • 4 drops tea tree
  • 2 drops lavender
  • 1 drop geranium
  • 1 drop patchouli

Recipe # 4 - Simple recipe for children over 2
  • 1 tbsp carrier oil
  • 1 drop tea tree
  • 1 drop geranium

  1. Mix your carrier oil with the essential oils.
  2. Massage the mixture into your scalp.
  3. Leave on for at least 15-20 minutes.
  4. Wash out with a gentle shampoo.

Anytime you try new essential oils, it is best to do a patch test first.  Mix one drop of the essential oil with a teaspoon of carrier oil and place a drop on the inside of your elbow or arm.  Watch for 24 hours to ensure there is no sensitivity or adverse reaction, such as rash or redness.

What do all the symbols on beauty products actually mean?

Thanks for reading!

What do all the symbols on beauty products actually mean?

Hello everyone!

Do you pay attention to the symbols on your beauty products?  I certainly do!  It is vital to know the signs used in cosmetic packaging when choosing a product.  Those symbols are meant to inform the customer.

Keep reading to find out more about the 12 most common symbols...

PAO (Period after opening)
The little container with a number is the recommended use-by time after opening the product.  Most of them will be 6 or 12 "m" (months).

Estimated symbol
This symbol is used to specify that the product is packed using "average fill system".  This only means you will get "X" amount of product, shown in grams or millilitres.

UVA symbol
The UVA symbol means that the product contains the minimum recommended level of ultraviolet protection.

Leaping Bunny
The jumping bunny signifies a product that is cruelty-free.  Both the product and the ingredients will not have been tested on animals.  So always look out for this if you only shop vegan products.

Hands with booklet
This icon means there is a leaflet attached to the product, that will tell you more in-depth about the product warnings and conditions of use.

Green Dot
It signifies that the business pays to recover and recycle the product.

PETA bunny
Another icon to show that the product is cruelty-free and not tested on an animal at any stage.

Certified vegan
The item contains no animal products.

The item should not be used close to an open fire nor should it be exposed to high temperature.

Certified organic (Bio)
The product contains only organic produced ingredients.

Folded arrows
It is, of course, the universal sign for recycling.  If the symbol is stand alone, it means the packaging is recyclable.  But if it has a percentage next to it, this indicates how much of the packaging is made from recycled content.

The eco-friendly stamp means that the formula will be at least 95% made from natural ingredients and if accompanied by the phrase ‘Organic Cosmetic’, it means that 95% of the plant-based ingredients come from organic farming.  If it says ‘Natural Cosmetic’, this means that only 50% of its plant-based ingredients come from organic farming.

I shop for vegan, cruelty-free products, preferably organic!  What symbols do you look for in your beauty products?

Shhh... It's a beauty secret! #03 | DIY: Natural toothpaste

Hello everyone!

Today I want to share another "beauty secret" with you.  As a matter of fact, I have a confession to make; I haven't used conventional toothpaste in YEARS!

Wait, I do not mean that I don't brush my teeth.  In fact, I brush and floss every day.  I actually make my own natural toothpaste by simple mixing extra virgin organic coconut oil and baking soda.  I use a simple 50/50 mixture.

Advantages of using coconut oil and baking soda toothpaste:
  • antibacterial and antifungal
  • whitens and removes stains
  • stops tooth decay
  • no colourants
  • no chemical agents
  • no fluoride
  • easy and cheap to prepare

Coconut oil is a powerful, natural antibacterial and antifungal.  It kills harmful bacteria in the mouth, including bacteria that are responsible for gingivitis.  It's great for the gums and brushing with the oil regularly can heal and prevent bleeding gums.  Brushing your tongue with coconut oil helps with oral thrush, and it has been found to stop and even reverse some tooth decay.

Baking soda is used for two reasons.  It is mildly abrasive and therefore provides a gentle cleansing and it’s alkaline.  Being alkaline, baking soda can neutralise acids in the mouth that are often at the root of tooth decay.  Plus, it also absorbs odours.

Have you ever made your own toothpaste?  What ingredients did you use?
