Four types of diagnostic tests

Hello everyone!

In this blog, I always talk about the importance of lifestyle to health and wellness.  However, an apple a day doesn’t always keep the doctor away.  We still need to visit the doctor and sometimes go through medical procedures.

In this post, I want to talk about diagnostic tests; what each exam is for and what to expect during the procedure.  Going through any diagnostic test would make any person anxious.  It is perfectly normal to feel nervous when your physician orders an exam to diagnose your condition.  However, learning about each exam can give you peace of mind.

Here are four types of diagnostic tests that can be done at facilities such as Middletown Medical Imaging.

Open MRI Scan
If you are worried about a traditional MRI scanner, you can ask your physician about an open MRI scanner.  It features an open design that brings you mental and physical comfort during the procedure.  You may need an MRI for your heart, blood vessels, brain or spinal cord.

Digital X-Ray
A digital X-ray is a procedure in which you lie on an exam table or stand next to a cassette holder.  You need to hold still as your technician takes images of your body.  It only takes several seconds to take each image, and the entire procedure only takes up to 30 minutes.  Your physician may order a digital X-ray to check your joints, bones, soft tissues or abdominal area.

High-Resolution Ultrasound
A high-resolution ultrasound uses a transducer to send inaudible sound waves through your body.  The sound waves bounce back to show your physician information on your organs and soft tissues.  Your physician uses this information to diagnose your medical condition.  A high-resolution ultrasound identifies conditions in the heart, liver, pancreas and gallbladder.

16 Slice CT Scan
A 16 slice CT scan uses a rotating gantry to take images of the problem area.  The images are taken from different views and angles to give your physician an accurate reading.  You are going to lie on a table that moves through the gantry, but you do not have to worry about staying in the gantry for long.  A 16 slice CT scan is used to check areas such as your organs, blood vessels, bones and spinal cord.

Here are some tips to follow as you prepare for a diagnostic test:
  1. Be mentally ready - With the right mindset, going through any test will be easier to handle.
  2. Be physically ready – Follow the prep instructions given to you prior to the procedure.
  3. Try not to worry too much! - A diagnostic test is simply that: a test.  Besides, creating needless stress and worry will certainly affect your test.

Whether you need a digital X-ray or open MRI scanner, it is important to schedule your diagnostic test shortly after receiving your referral.

I hope you found this information helpful.

Have a great day!

My FSJ shoes picks

Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.  - Marilyn Monroe

Hello everyone!

Hope you are all doing well.

Recently I was introduced to an amazing online shoe store called FSJ shoesFSJ makes shoes, suitable for every style and occasion.  You can find them at www.fsjshoes.com and trust me; you will find, more than a few, shoes you love!

At FSJ shoes you can find a lovely selection of shoes including kitten heels.  A kitten heel is a short, slender heel, usually from 3.5 centimetres (1.5 inches) to 4.75 centimetres.  Personally, I love wearing a kitten heel, especially in the daytime.

If kitten heels aren’t your style, then you can also find stilettos, flats, chunky heels, wedges and many more.  In today’s post, I put together some of my favourite shoes that I wish I could have in my closet right now.

Here are a few of my favourite pairs from FSJ:

I absolutely adore these black kitten heels!

These are my favourite silver kitten heels.

I’m also obsessed with vintage shoes, so I had to include a few pairs in this post…

You can visit their website for the price and more information on size and colour.  You can even sort by colour, price, heel height, season and occasion.

The best part is that you just need to select the right pair for yourself and it will get delivered at your doorstep.

So go ahead, girls!  What are you waiting for?!  And remember, Cinderella is proof that a new pair of shoes can change your life.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post as much as I enjoyed writing it.

A healthier Halloween 🎃 🍭🍫🍬

Hello everyone!

A healthy Halloween... Is such a thing even possible?  Absolutely!  Below are some ideas, tips and tricks for a healthier Halloween.

  1. If you or your children are going trick-or-treating, pay attention to the size of the trick-or-treat bag, and keep it small.  This means no pillowcases!  They can hold way too much candy.
  2. Before trick-or-treating, have a healthy meal.  If everyone is full, there will be less chance of eating along the way.  Children should always wait until they get home to eat any of their candy, so that parents can inspect them first.
  3. When you’re buying candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters, eliminate temptation by buying candy you don’t like, and buy it at the last minute.
  4. Choose non-food items like the ones you’d find in a child’s birthday goodie bag; items like stickers, sidewalk chalk, small packs of crayons, noisemakers or costume jewellery.
  5. Walk, instead of driving the car from neighborhood to neighborhood.
  6. Halloween goodies should be stored in a cupboard, ‘out of sight, out of mind’, for children and adults alike.
  7. If you have kids, be a good role model by moderating your own candy consumption.  Enjoy one or two small pieces at a time, and allow your children to do the same.

Remember that Halloween, like other holidays, is just one day of the year.

By eating candy in moderation, taking necessary precautions, providing healthy alternatives, and integrating a little physical activity, you can have a happy, healthy, and fun Halloween!  If you make healthy eating a habit, a few days of overindulgence is perfectly fine, and should be enjoyed!

What tricks do you have for making Halloween a little bit healthier?  Share them in the comments section below or on the blog’s Facebook page!

DIY: Vegan hair mask

Hello everyone!

I noticed that I haven't posted a DIY hair mask recipe in years, so today I want to share my favourite homemade vegan hair mask.  Check it out...

Ingredients:

These natural ingredients will give your hair intense moisture to bring its shine and health back.  The oils in avocado are easily absorbed by the hair.  Also, agave syrup attracts and locks moisture while olive oil moisturises and makes the syrup manageable.

Method:
  1. Mash a whole overripe avocado into a bowl.
  2. Add ½ cup of agave syrup.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and mix well.
  4. Massage the mixture into damp hair and leave it on for 30 minutes.
  5. Rinse the mask off completely.

You can apply this vegan hair mask as regularly as every week, given that natural ingredients have no adverse side effects.

Boost your mascara with lavender oil

Hello everyone!

As I told you in previous posts, essential oils can promote healthy hair and scalp.  In fact, I put tea tree oil in my shampoo to prevent itchy scalp.  But did you know that you can also use essential oils to help promote healthy eyelash hair growth?  Here's how...

All you have to do is put one drop of 100% pure lavender essential oil in your mascara tube right when you open it for the first time.  One tiny drop of essential oil is enough.  Then you just apply as usual.

Just 1 drop of pure lavender oil:
  • extends the life of your mascara
  • kills mites and bacteria
  • promotes lash growth
  • strengthens your lashes
  • + it smells amazing!

Notes:
  • Some people claim to have had issues with some kinds of mascara but it has worked well with the mascara brands that I use.
  • Only use 100% pure lavender essential oil; no added ingredients!

I’d love to hear from those of you who have tried this!  Has lavender oil made your lashes longer and thicker too?

DIY: Bug repellent spray 🐛🐜 🐌

Hello everyone!

Let's talk about... bugs.  Warm spring weather means that bugs and other pests come out of hibernation.  As a vegan, I don't want to kill any bugs, but they can be extremely annoying!

Of course, many people turn to chemical sprays to get rid of them.  Unfortunately, in addition to having a very unpleasant odour, conventional insect repellents can harm people who have allergies, and even cause health issues, not to mention the harmful effects to the environment.

Fortunately, you can repel pests with essential oils.  Here's a recipe for a DIY bug repellent spray!

Ingredients:
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons essential oil/s (list below)
  • 1 tablespoon vodka or rubbing alcohol
  • 1/2 cup  witch hazel
  • 1/2 cup water (or vinegar)
  • 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin (optional)

Method:
  1. Place essential oils in a glass spray bottle.  Add vodka or alcohol and shake well.
  2. Pour in witch hazel and shake to combine.
  3. Add 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin, if using.  This helps the ingredients stay combined.
  4. Add water and shake again.  Shake well before each use.

Below is a list of bugs and pests and the essential oils you can use to repel them:

Ants: Peppermint, Spearmint
Aphids: Cedarwood, Hyssop, Peppermint, Spearmint
Beetles: Peppermint, Thyme
Caterpillars: Peppermint, Spearmint
Chiggers: Lavender, Lemongrass, Sage, Thyme
Fleas: Peppermint, Spearmint, Lemongrass, Lavender
Flies: Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage
Gnats: Patchouli, Spearmint
Lice: Cedarwood, Peppermint, Spearmint
Mosquitoes: Lavender, Lemongrass
Moths: Cedarwood, Hyssop, Lavender, Peppermint, Spearmint
Plant lice: Peppermint, Spearmint
Slugs: Cedarwood, Hyssop, Pine
Snails: Cedarwood, Pine, Patchouli
Spiders: Peppermint, Spearmint
Ticks: Lavender, Lemongrass, Sage, Thyme
Weevils: Cedarwood, Patchouli, Sandalwood

What do you use to repel bugs and pest from your home?
