Healing cracked heels at home

Hello everyone!  This past week I was on vacation and didn't have time to blog but now I’m back with more home remedies.
Most of us love wearing sandals, but we cringe at the idea of exposing dry heels.  Read on to learn a few simple home remedies to cure dry and cracked heels…

  • Before going to bed rub olive oil or sesame oil into your dry, cracked heels.  After applying the oil wear a pair of socks.  Leave the socks on overnight, as it helps the heels absorb all the moisture.  This is one of the best remedy for cracked heels.
  • Massage your feet with coconut oil every night.  Rinse off in the morning.
  • Make a mixture of lemon juice and papaya; apply it on the cracked heels.  Wash off after 20 minutes.
  • Do not throw away the ripe banana!  Simply mash one ripe banana and apply it thoroughly on the dry and cracked heels.  Leave the mash on for 10 to 15 minutes and then wash it off.
  • Daily cleansing and moisturising is essential, for dry heels.  At the end of the day soak your feet in lukewarm water (mix in some sodium bicarbonate or salt).  Wash off with a pumice stone.
  • After drying your feet, apply your favourite foot cream to moisturise.  Wear a pair of socks immediately and keep the socks on overnight.
  • Remember, the sugar scrub?  This is the sweetest remedy for cracked heels. J
  • Drink a lot of water to keep your skin and body hydrated.

Tips for preventing dry and cracked heels:
  1. Buy the right size of footwear as ill fitting shoes cause damage to the feet.
  2. Avoid walking barefoot even when you are at home.
  3. Moisturise your feet daily to keep them soft and supple.
  4. Clean your heels by rubbing them with pumice stone to get rid of the dead dull skin on regular basis or use a scrub.

These are just a few home remedies.  Do you know of any other home remedy for dry, cracked heels?  Leave a comment!

Baking soda beauty tips!

Hello everyone!

Today’s post is about my favourite multi-purpose product: baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)!

Here are some of my favourite baking soda beauty tips

Skin care tips:
  • In the palm of your hand, mix some baking soda with your facial cleanser to make a gentle exfoliant (and make-up remover).  Read this post for more information: Scrub you face with sodium bicarbonate!
  • This can also be used for rough skin on elbows and feet.  Make a thick paste with baking soda and water (about 3:1) and scrub away.
  • Baking soda in a warm bath not only softens the skin, it may also help with body acne and eczema.

Hair tips:
  • Mix some baking soda to your shampoo to remove product buildup.
  • Remove product and oil buildup by soaking your combs and brushes in a bowl of warm water with about 3 tablespoons of baking soda.
Nail care:
  • Scrubbing your nails with a nailbrush dipped in baking soda will soften cuticles.
Oral hygiene:
  • Brush your teeth with a past of baking soda and water.  This will clean and polish/whiten your teeth!
  • Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to half a glass of water, and use it to gargle.  Baking soda neutralises the odors in your mouth (bad breath).  Benefits of this mouthwash:
·       inexpensive
·       no harsh chemicals
·       no strong taste
·       alcohol-free

Do you have any other beauty tips that include baking soda?  I’d love to know!

Summer hair care

Hello everyone!

We all know that the summer sun is very dangerous and that we need to protect our skin.  But some tend to forget that the sun can also damage our hair.

Here are some tips and tricks to ensure that your hair does not get damaged this season:

  • Wear a scarf, hat or cap to protect your hair from the sun.
  • If you are going to be in the sun and you don't want to wear anything on your head, always use a hair sunscreen.
  • Limit your use of hot tools on your hair (i.e. blow dryers, curling and straightening irons).  Always use a heat protectant!
  • Staying hydrated is important for your overall healthy and for your hair as well so make sure that you are drinking enough water.
  • Avoid hair products with alcohol in them which dry out hair.  Try to use natural products that are gentler on your hair.
  • Before going into the pool/sea wet your hair; this will decrease the absorption of chlorinated/salt water into your hair.

  • Use a clarifying shampoo after swimming in a pool to wash out the chlorine in your hair.  Chlorine will severely dry out your hair if it is not washed out.
  • Try co-washing more often than shampooing your hair.
  • You can also use dry shampoos. (Personally, I don’t like them!)
  • Use a moisturising shampoo that is gentler than your regular shampoo for the summer.
  • Use moisturising hair masks and deep conditioners.
  • Once you have your hair moist, lock in the moisture by rinsing your hair with cold water; this will also give your hair an extra shine.
  • Get your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks.  Your hair grows faster in the warmer months.
  • Try tying your hair, braiding it or wearing it up or in a bun.

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Fireworks!!

Hello everyone!

Today is the 4th of July and on this day displays of fireworks take place across the U.S.  I am Maltese and my country is renowned for its fireworks.  We have fireworks displays all summer during our village “festa”, and this is what inspired this NOTD post!

The above pictures were taken before I applied a top coat.
