I merged my two blogs



Hello everyone!


I decided to merge my two blogs.

A few months ago, I started my second blog, Hair and Make-up Suggestions.   I thought it would be easier to post about different topics on different blogs.  I found myself posting more skin care related post, and wasn’t updating Hair and Make-up Suggestions as often as I had planned to.  So I merged Hair and Make-up Suggestions with Skin Care Suggestions

DIY: Anti-cellulite scrub

Anti-cellulite coffee scrub


Topical caffeine has been shown to reduce the appearance of cellulite. If you suffer from cellulite or simple want to prevent it, make your own scrub, instead of spending money on creams and treatments (that don’t always work).  The coffee scrub is very easy to make, it’s effective and quite inexpensive!


Ingredients:
  • Coffee
  • Sugar or sea salt
  • Rosemary essential oil
  • Olive oil

You will need coffee grounds, freshly ground coffee beans or instant coffee. Coffee reduces the appearance of cellulite,  rosemary is well known for its cell regenerating properties, both sugar and sea salt are great exfoliants, and olive oil is an excellent  moisturiser.

 

Method:
  • Mix 12 drops of rosemary essential oil with 3 tablespoons of olive oil.
  • Mix 1 part sugar or sea salt with 3 parts coffee.
  • Blend the oil with the coffee and sugar/salt mixture to make a paste.
  • Store in the refrigerator until use. 

How to use:
  • Vigorously rub your anti-cellulite scrub onto troubled areas; you can use gloves if you want to.
  • After rubbing all cellulite-prone areas, rinse off the scrub.
  •  Use twice a week for best results.

This home-made scrub is very effective; the only downside is the smell (especially if like me, you don’t like coffee!).  But nonetheless it's worth a try.

Honey face


It is renowned that honey has strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and it has been used as a treatment for wounds and other skin problems for thousands of years.
In fact, honey is one of the most common home remedies for acne and acne scars.  It's cheap and 100% natural.  It's also incredibly easy to use.  
Honey is very moisturising.  This makes the honey mask ideal for people with dry skin.  If you have oily or combination skin, you can add a few drops of lemon juice to your honey mask.  Lemon juice is also good for treating acne scars, (read Lemons for clear skin for more information) but unlike honey, it may dry your skin.  
A teaspoon of honey is enough to cover your entire face.  Apply a thin layer and keep the honey mask on for at least 30 minutes.  If you are patient enough, leave it on for one hour, for optimum results.  The mask will not harden or dry.  Wash the mask off with lukewarm water.  Pad your face dry with a towel and apply your moisturiser.


Tips:

  •  Avoid applying a thick layer to your face because the warmth of your skin will melt the honey making it drip all over your clothes.  
  • You can also use a drop of honey as a spot treatment on a pimple or acne scar.

Honey is a very popular ingredient, used in various DIY beauty recipes.  When used alone as a facial mask, honey makes  the perfect natural, homemade mask to use on days when you feel lazy and do not want to mix ingredients to make other homemade masks.  
Honey will leave your skin looking healthy and radiant!

DIY: Bath salts



In my last post I wrote about the many benefits of using bath salts.  It is also very easy to make your own bath salts.  Here’s how…

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups Dead Sea salt, regular sea salt, Epsom salt or a blend of these salts.
  • 15-24 drops of your selected essential oil or essential oil blend.

Optional:

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil, olive oil or another carrier oil (moisturising)
  • Food colouring
  •  2 tablespoons baking soda
  •  2 tablespoons dry milk
  • 1 or 2 tablespoons finely ground oatmeal
  •  Rose petals

Method:

  • Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix very well with a spoon or fork.
  • To keep your salts from hardening, lay them out in a thin layer to completely dry before placing them in a container.
  •  Store in an air-tight jar.  Salts that are kept in a container that is not air-tight will lose their aroma more quickly.


To use: Add ½ cup of the salts to running bath water.  Mix well to ensure that the salt has dissolved well in the tub before entering.

Also, DIY bath salts in a decorative jar, with a small measuring spoon, make a great inexpensive gift.

The many benefits of using bath salts



Hello everyone!

A long soak in a hot bath can be very relaxing, right?  Of course, but adding bath salts can dramatically improve the experience.  Bath salts come in different colours, scents, and textures; from fine to coarse.  But relaxation is not the only benefit of bath salts.

Bath salts also offer many other benefits including certain healing properties.  For instance, few people know that adding a little salt to your bath water can actually help improve your circulation.  Bath salts are great for easing  sore muscles and aching feet and legs.  Consequently, those that suffer from muscle spasms, arthritis and back pain can all benefit from the use of bath salts.

Bath salts open the pores to purify the skin, cleansing away dirt, sweat, and toxins.  They aid in the healing of dry skin, making skin softer and smoother. Salts, such as bath salt, sea salt or Epsom salt, are also good for exfoliation.

Salts can help improve common irritations such as insect bites, minor rashes, and calluses on feet, and more serious skin conditions like athlete's foot, eczema, and psoriasis.  

Salts made with essential oils also have the added benefit of aromatherapy. Bath salts can help you unwind at the end of the day and help you get a good night's sleep.  They are the perfect way to relax mind and body.

DIY: Greek yoghurt, oatmeal and honey facial mask

Hello everyone!

Greek yoghurt is a nourishing food that provides minerals such as Calcium and Zinc for strong bones, teeth and immune system.  Besides, as you probably already know, yoghurt is also beneficial when applied topically to the skin. 

Yoghurt has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, making it ideal for acne prone skin.  It is also rich in Zinc which, as I told you in previous posts, aids in the healing of acne.  

Yoghurt contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which helps exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells and smoothing out fine lines.  It also helps to smooth rough, dry skin and even skin tone.  This makes it an excellent treatment for age spots and hyper pigmentation.  Yoghurt also helps unclog pores.  


Here’s an easy recipe for a hydrating and exfoliating DIY Greek yoghurt, oatmeal and honey facial mask:

Ingredients: 
  • 1 tablespoon of plain full fat Greek yoghurt
  • 1 tablespoon ground oatmeal  (exfoliating)
  • 1 teaspoon of honey (also has incredible antibacterial properties)

Method:

Yoghurt can be used alone on the skin or mixed with other ingredients to increase its benefits.  For instance, honey's antibacterial properties soothe any inflammation on the skin and adding oatmeal enhances the mask’s exfoliating effect.  Yoghurt mask also helps tighten pores.
Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl and apply a thick layer to clean skin.  Rinse after 30 minutes with lukewarm water.  Apply moisturiser.

Greek yoghurt helps with all kinds of skin issues from dry, dull skin to acne and oiliness.  Using a yoghurt mask once or twice a week will keep skin healthy and glowing without having to use products that are full of chemicals and preservatives.

Lemons for clear skin


The health benefits of lemons are countless, but did you know that they can be particularly beneficial to oily and/or acne prone skin?

What makes the lemon one of the best natural skin care ingredients?

The lemon…

  • Is rich in vitamin C ( one of the best skin vitamins) 
  • Is a natural astringent
  • Is a natural skin whitener
  • Stimulates blood circulation

Lemon juice can be used both topically and internally to achieve soft, smooth and clear skin. 


Topical use:

Lemons can help heal acne and acne scars.  Citric acid contained in lemon juice exfoliates the skin, which is essential to accelerate the healing of acne. It also acts as an astringent and dries the pimples.  Also, being a natural whitener, lemon juice reduces the redness of pimples naturally.
You can dilute the lemon juice with water and use as a skin toner.  I suggest adding pure lemon juice on a wet cotton ball.  If you have sensitive skin and think that diluted lemon juice would still irritate your skin, mix a few undiluted drops with Aloe vera.   
Lemons are also a great way to get rid of blackheads.  Rub lemon juice over any blackhead you might have, before going to bed, and then wash it off the next morning.  Repeat nightly if necessary.

Internal use:

Drink a glass of warm water with lemon juice and honey first thing in the morning (i.e. on an empty stomach), everyday.  This will help to clean your body and clear the skin.

Tips:

Lemons can irritate the skin so avoid using on broken or sensitive skin, when undiluted.
Do not apply lemon juice to your skin during the day, before sun exposure, as it makes the skin more sensitive to sunlight and can leave brown marks on the skin.

DIY: Pumpkin facial mask


Hello everyone!

Did you know that pumpkins are not just used for jack-o-lanterns and Thanksgiving pies?
Pumpkin makes an excellent facial mask ingredient, for all skin types; it’s incredibly rich in vital anti-oxidants and vitamins.  Pumpkin is high in vitamin A, vitamin C and Zinc.


So, here is a simple recipe for a nourishing, pumpkin facial mask:

Ingredients:

  •  ¼ cup of cooked or canned pumpkin 
  •   ½  teaspoons honey (moisturises the skin and provides antiseptic properties)
  •   ¼  teaspoons milk (moisturises and exfoliates)

Optional:

  • For very dry skin: Add ¼ teaspoon heavy whipping cream (moisturises and exfoliates).
  • For oily skin: Add a ¼ teaspoon of apple cider (astringent and regulates pH) or cranberry juice (high in antioxidants).

Method:

  • Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and use a hand blender to get the right consistency (purée)
  • Apply liberally to face and neck
  •  Leave for 15 – 20 minutes
  •  Rinse off with warm water
  •  Apply moisturiser



This pumpkin mask will gently exfoliate, nourish and moisturise your skin.

Tip:

I suggest using a head band to keep your hair off your face, while using a facial mask.

DIY: Avocado hair mask


Have you ever tried making your own hair masks?  Hair masks help you to nourish and improve the condition of your hair.

One of the most effective hair masks is the avocado mask.  Avocados contain minerals, vitamins and fatty acids that can add shine to your hair.  Of course, you can buy avocado hair masks, but making your own is very easy and inexpensive.  Besides, homemade masks do not include any chemicals and harmful ingredients.  An avocado mask, works as a natural deep conditioner and can help restore shine to dry and damaged hair.
This is a simple version of a DIY avocado hair mask with few, yet very effective ingredients.  It’s very quick and easy to prepare.

Ingredients:


  • 1 ripe avocado (½ for short hair)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons pure coconut/almond/olive oil (whichever you prefer)



Method:

  • Peel the avocado and remove the pit.        
  • Mash the avocado and make sure it’s free of big chunks.
  • Mix the coconut/almond/olive oil and raw honey with the avocado.
  • Blend the mixture until it turns creamy.
  • Apply the mixture from roots to tips onto clean, towel-dried hair.  
  • Let the avocado hair mask sit in your hair for 30 minutes.  If you suffer from dry, flaky scalp, massage the mixture into your scalp.
  • Rinse the mixture out with warm water.
  • Shampoo and condition as usual.

Use this mask twice a month to maintain soft, shiny and healthy hair.

Day cream and night cream: What’s the difference?


A lot of people use facial creams every morning and night, to maintain a healthy skin.  Very often people use a different facial cream for the day-time and for night-time, these creams are commonly referred to as day creams and night creams.

One of the main differences between day creams and night creams is that, most day creams contain SPF to protect the skin from UV rays, whereas night creams don’t have such ingredients.  There would be no point in applying a cream containing SPF at night.


On the one hand, day cream has active ingredients that protect and replenish the skin throughout the day; while on the other hand, night cream revitalises and restores the skin.  Night creams contain more nutrients and vitamins than day creams; this is because the body absorbs more during the night.

Night creams usually contain more emollient, hydrating and moisturising ingredients.  These formulations work fine at night, but they may appear greasy if applied during the day.  Day creams have a lighter consistency and this helps the pores breathe properly.  Besides from protecting the skin from UV rays, day creams also protect the skin from other environmental factors, namely; pollution, cold, heat and wind.

Tip:

If you want just one cream that can be used both day and night, then opt for a non-SPF light weight moisturising cream that can be applied with a sunscreen during the day and without at night.

Hair care products may cause acne!

Hello everyone!
Did you know that not only skin care products, but also hair care products, can cause acne (acne cosmetica)?  If you breakout primarily around your hairline and/or forehead, your hair care products could be the cause.  That’s because, greasy or irritating ingredients in sprays, gels, mousses and waxes can clog pores.

Furthermore, your shampoo and conditioner may also cause acne around the hairline and/or forehead.  As I previously told you in Choosing facial cleansers, most shampoos contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.  The percentage varies in different shampoos, but these chemicals are highly comedogenic and are known to cause breakouts in some people.  Besides, silicones like Dimethicone are also comedogenic ingredients commonly found in hair care products, particularly conditioners.  (Read Silicone-base hair care products if you want to know more.

So, if you tend to breakout around the hairline and forehead area; shampoo and condition your hair, rinse carefully (with cold water) and always wash your face afterwards.  You should also use as little product as necessary to get the job done.
